Welcome to St James the Apostle, Temple Normanton.
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”— James 1:22
A Faithful and Prayerful Catholic Parish in the Church of England
St James the Apostle, Temple Normanton, is a traditional Anglican parish in the Diocese of Derby, joyfully upholding the Catholic faith as received by the Church of England. As a Society parish, we are part of the faithful witness to the apostolic Church in continuity with Scripture, the Creeds, the Sacraments, and the historic threefold order of ministry.
Named for the Apostle James, a man of action and prayer, our parish life reflects his legacy: faith made visible through worship, service, and discipleship.
Here, the Holy Mass is at the heart of who we are — forming us in the love of Christ and sending us out in His name.
Pastoral oversight: The Bishop of Oswestry
As a parish affiliated with The Society under the patronage of St Wilfrid and St Hilda, we receive pastoral and sacramental oversight from The Right Reverend Paul Thomas SSC, Bishop of Oswestry. Bishop Paul serves as the Provincial Episcopal Visitor for traditionalist Anglo-Catholic parishes in the western Province of Canterbury, including the Diocese of Derby.
This oversight ensures that our parish remains faithful to the Catholic understanding of the Church, grounded in the historic episcopate, and nourished by the sacraments instituted by Christ.
The Mass: The Source and Summit of Our Life
At St James the Apostle, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist — the Mass — is central to our worship, our prayer, and our mission.
We strive to offer God the worship that is His due: reverent, beautiful, and worthy. Through liturgy adorned with sacred music, vestments, incense, and silence, we draw close to the mystery of Christ’s Real Presence in the Sacrament of the Altar.
Our Worship Life Includes:
- Sunday Parish Mass – [Insert time]
- Weekday Masses and Feasts – [Insert times]
- Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
- Confessions and pastoral care available on request
- Observance of the liturgical calendar with due solemnity
- Devotions including the Rosary and Stations of the Cross (in season)
All are welcome — whether lifelong Anglicans, returning believers, or seekers new to the faith.
A Community of Faith, Fellowship, and Service - Inspired by the example of St James, we believe that faith must be lived — not only professed.
As a community, we are committed to:
- Daily prayer and the reading of Scripture
- Preaching rooted in the Catholic tradition
- Catechesis and formation for all ages
- Practical acts of love and charity
- Hospitality, fellowship, and care for one another
- Encouraging vocations to lay and ordained ministry
We strive to be a beacon of light and welcome in Temple Normanton — a place where Christ is truly known and made known.
